What the list holds is unusual even by this country's standards — three Urartian fortresses within reach of one city. Van Kalesi sits above the old town, Çavuştepe and Hoşap lie to the south-east along the road toward Hakkâri, and the museum in the city keeps what has been taken out of them.
The other half is Armenian: the Church of the Holy Cross on Akdamar, the monastery on Lim, and the churches and tomb towers around the lake. Akdamar and Lim are islands, reached by boat, so where they fall in a day depends on a timetable we do not have.
