The cemetery is in the town of Büyük Kalecik in the central district of Afyonkarahisar, twelve kilometres from the city.
On 27 August 1922, the second day of the Great Offensive, Captain Agâh Efendi — son of Ziver Bey of Bayburt, aged 24, commander of the 6th Company of the 36th Infantry Regiment of the 12th Division — was given the task of taking the Kalecik and Kurtkaya area, the only pass leading to Kocatepe where the commander-in-chief's headquarters stood. He faced an enemy division of 2,500 men, far stronger than his own force. With the 150 soldiers under his command and Senior Lieutenant Feyzullah of Sinop he pushed into the middle of the enemy, inflicted heavy losses, and was killed there along with Feyzullah Efendi and 101 of his men.
The cemetery built in their name was first constructed by the Ministry of National Defence on 26 August 1972. In 1993 the Ministry of Culture added the graves themselves, a monument, a ceremonial area and paths, and covered the graves of Agâh and Feyzullah Efendi with an arched dome in the Seljuk manner. A fountain was also built in front of the wall facing the road, for the use of those passing by.
