This is a university collection that grew into a museum. Systematic collecting for it began in September 2009 within the engineering faculty of Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, and the first display opened on 26 December 2010 in room 021 on the ground floor of the faculty building, with fourteen cases of minerals, rocks, fossils, ornamental stones and special collections. As the number of specimens grew the museum moved to larger quarters allotted by the dean's office, where material gathered from various parts of Turkey and the world is now shown in thirty-four cases; the labels inside each case name the specimen and whoever gave it.
The department applied to the ministry of culture and tourism on 27 February 2014, received authorisation to establish the museum that September, and from 14 April 2015 it has been listed as a private museum under the ministry's supervision under the name Yerbilimleri ve Doğa Tarihi Müzesi. Beyond the cases there is a room for teaching demonstrations and a section displaying old instruments once used in geophysical and geodetic engineering. The collection keeps growing by donation and by exchange of specimens, and the donors are thanked on panels in the display hall.
