Toprakkale is open to visitors, with lighting at night and the grounds laid out. It stands on an artificial mound at the meeting point of the Osmaniye, Adana and İskenderun roads — two kilometres from the district of Toprakkale and about ten from the provincial centre.
Its history goes back to around 2000 BC. In the eighth century it was rebuilt in black stone in the time of the Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid, and in the Ottoman period it was known as Kınık castle. It is rectangular in plan, with twelve towers and an outer courtyard wall.
