The mosque was built in 1482 by Sitti Hatun, wife of Mehmed the Conqueror and daughter of Süleyman Bey of the Dulkadiroğlu. The historical sources show that she had the mosque built in part of her palace, which was still standing in 1743.
It is known locally by several names: the Sitti Şah Sultan Mosque, the Sitti Sultan Mosque and the Hatuniye Mosque. It was repaired in the 1980s and the 1990s.
Three endowment deeds survive, of 1520, 1530 and 1574. The deed of 1530 records that the villages of Tavruk and Kratoya near Keşan were endowed to the mosque, and the deed of 1573-74 adds the village of Depeli to those two.
