Karagöl lies northeast of Şavşat in Artvin and is reached by 30 kilometres of unsurfaced road, by private or hired vehicle.
The lake covers eight to ten hectares. There is electricity and water, and the regional forestry directorate keeps a rest house and a radio set there.
The wildlife the provincial directorate lists belongs to Şavşat and its surroundings rather than to the lake itself: lynx, brown bear, chamois, mountain grouse and birds of prey.
A separate lake of the same name, Borçka Karagöl, lies elsewhere in this province.
