The Greek Orthodox church on Hürriyet Caddesi in Antakya is still in use for worship, which is the first thing to know about visiting it.
Its building history comes to us in two overlapping accounts on the same page. One is that construction began in the 1860s and that the building was badly damaged and destroyed in the earthquake of 1872. The other is that construction began at the end of the 19th century and that the church opened for worship in 1900. Whether these describe one building or a first attempt and its replacement is not made clear.
What stands now is rectangular in plan, with a bell tower on its right and a courtyard surrounded by arcades.
