The medrese adjoins the great mosque of Diyarbakır on its north side. From the inscription on it, building began in 1198 in the time of the Artuqid emir Ebu Muzaffer Sökmen. It is two storeys, of cut stone, and the provincial directorate describes it as a work of art of great value for its decoration and its inscriptions — and as the first university in Anatolia in which teaching was carried on.
One detail is worth looking for in the courtyard: the turning stone columns set on either side of the mihrab were put there to detect any settling in the building. It is on Pirinçler Sokak in the Cami Kebir quarter.
