Marmaris national park was declared on 30 January 1996 and covers 29,206 hectares on the Reşadiye peninsula. It rings the town of Marmaris, running south to Bakla Bükü and east as far as Ekincik Burnu, and the military zones at Aksaz and Karaagaç are deliberately left outside its bounds.
Red pine makes up the forest. The tree to look for is the oriental sweetgum, endemic to this country, which grows in parts of the park where the soil is deep, damp and heavy. Inside the valleys the pine grows mixed — alder, plane and oak among it — and the Mediterranean shrub layer is wide: bay and oleander, carob and terebinth, wild olive and the strawberry tree, with holm and kermes oak through it. The park is 60 kilometres from Muğla on the D400, and it can also be reached from the sea. It is open between 09:00 and 17:00.
