The museum began with stoves. In 1997 someone at the 13th section office in Eskişehir had the stoves in the materials store repainted and put on display in the office, and the idea of a museum came out of that. Those particular stoves, ordered from Germany in 1908 and cast with a tulip motif, were joined by material supplied by the TCDD 1st Regional Directorate and the TÜLOMSAŞ general directorate, and the museum opened in 1998.
It occupies a building more than a century old on two dönüm of ground beside Eskişehir station. The garden holds the large equipment: motorised and hand-worked draisines, a level crossing with its barriers, a steam-powered tanker and a water tanker, track and locomotives.
Inside the historic building is a model of a railway station and its surroundings, five metres by three and a half, along with steam, diesel and electric locomotives and carriages, old telegraph and telex machines and magneto telephones, coal stoves, lamps and signs. Among the documents is the firman of Abdülhamid concerning the construction of the Anatolia-Baghdad railway, together with photographs of old stations and trains.
The museum is closed for restoration until 31 December 2026.
