The Cizre Museum has not opened yet. The ministry states that technical inspection, maintenance and repair, and a security assessment are still under way: structural problems found in the building are being dealt with, the display areas are being rearranged, and it will open when that work is complete.
When it does, it will be inside the inner citadel, which is itself part of the historic fabric of the town. Cizre is one of the significant settlements of Mesopotamia, and the region's past runs in layers through the Assyrian, Babylonian, Roman and Islamic civilisations to the Ottoman period. The collection is to consist of archaeological finds, ethnographic works and objects of local life.
