The castle stands on the bank of the Tigris in the centre of Cizre and is made up of an outer and an inner castle. From the remains, the stages of its building can be followed from the Roman and Byzantine periods onwards.
The form it has come down in is the one it took between the twelfth and sixteenth centuries, in the period of the Atabegs of Mosul and the beys of Cizre. The source says nothing about its condition today.
