İzmit Municipality opened this museum on 30 August 2022, the hundredth anniversary of the Great Offensive, and by its fourth year it had taken in some 80,500 visitors. It sets out the War of Independence on two scales at once, the national one and İzmit's own part in it.
The objects are those of the fighting — weapons, cartridges and medals of the period — shown with photographs of the figures of the struggle and explanatory material. The museum occupies a historic building, and the garden of that building is used through the year for commemorations, concerts, talks and children's programmes.
It is open Tuesday to Sunday: from 08:30 to 17:15 on weekdays, and at the weekend from 09:00 to 13:00 and again from 14:00 to 17:45. Groups are asked to book in advance.
