Tokatlı canyon at Safranbolu was cut by the Hizar stream wearing through limestone beds over thousands of years. One end of it is at Tokatlı village and the other reaches as far as the Gümüş quarter of the old market. The walking route that begins at the mouth of the canyon and follows the stream runs about nine kilometres.
Two built things stand on the canyon. One is the İncekaya aqueduct, notable for its architecture and its proportions; the other is the glass viewing terrace, built eighty metres above the canyon floor, which is where most visitors go for the view. Squirrels, horses and geese are among the animals kept or found in the canyon, and paintball and horse riding are among the activities on offer. The terrace area is about eight kilometres from central Safranbolu, reached by private car or taxi.
