The museum is in an imposing two-storey stone building of architectural value, put up on the hill where the old castle stood. From the inscription over its door it was built in 1904 through the efforts of Enis Paşa, governor of Kastamonu, and Mir Ahmet Bey, the district governor, with the townspeople contributing to the cost.
It served as the district government building until 1976, when a fire left it in ruins; it was restored by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. What is shown inside are scenes from the daily life of Safranbolu. It is in the old bazaar area.
