The meteor crater lies within the Mount Ağrı national park, 35 kilometres east of the Doğubayazıt district centre. It takes the form of a cylindrical shaft about 60 metres deep and 35 across, formed in the thick, fissured basalt that covers the Tertiary limestone.
The provincial directorate states that in depth and size it is the second largest meteor crater in the world after the one in Alaska. Among the local people it is held to have been made by a large meteorite that fell in 1892.
