The Melodere spruce grows inside Hatıla Valley National Park, at the Melodere locality in Taşlıca village in the central district of Artvin. Visiting it therefore means entering the national park, whose conditions this page does not set out.
It was declared a natural monument on 6 September 2002, on 1,000 square metres. The tree is an oriental spruce, Picea orientalis, about 150 years old, 30 metres tall, 0.76 metres in trunk diameter and 2.40 metres in girth — modest figures next to most of the country's monument trees, which suggests it was protected for what it represents in this valley rather than for record size.
The activities the directorate lists are trekking and mountaineering, which describe the terrain around the tree rather than the tree itself.
