Kartal Gölü Nature Conservation Area may not be entered without permission; the directorate says so in a separate notice. It covers 1,343 hectares and was declared on 23 December 1994.
Two things in one basin explain the protection. The first is what the directorate calls a monument forest, made up of old black pine trees. The second is Kartal Gölü itself, a lake lying in a glacial valley near the summit of Çiçekbaba mountain, in the alpine zone. The page gives no size, depth or altitude for the lake.
The area sits within the administrative boundaries of the Eskere Forest Management Directorate under the Denizli Regional Directorate, while lying inside Köyceğiz district of Muğla province; the page's address line names both Beyağaç in Denizli and Köyceğiz in Muğla.
