Among the varieties of house found across Kastamonu, the ones in the coastal district of İnebolu stand out for their own character. Their roofs are covered with the local slate, and their outer fronts are painted with ochre wash, so that red above all, with blue and white, gives the streets their colour.
The houses are generally built on steep slopes, and the difference in level produces their most distinctive feature: from the front they look like two-storey buildings, while the rear shows the mansions at their real height of four floors. Because the main houses were divided into harem and selamlik there are two staircases to the upper floors, and the floors were built to work independently of one another, like flats. The same type of house can be seen along the Black Sea coast outside İnebolu as well, at Abana, Ilisi, Bozkurt and Çatalzeytin. The houses stand throughout the town.
