The castle stands five kilometres north of Gerede, on a hill commanding the country around it on Arkut dağı. Surviving from the time of the Bithynians, it was restored in 1993.
The story told about it runs that when the town was attacked the people would take refuge in the castle with their goods and their animals and defend themselves. In one such attack the enemy camped around the castle and assaulted it by day without success. The attacks went on for days, and food in the castle began to run short.
One night the people lit candles on the horns of every goat in the castle and drove them out. Believing that a great army had come upon them, the enemy fled and scattered, and so, by their goats, the people of Gerede were saved. The castle is said to take its name from that.
