The pistachio is one of the basic agricultural products of Gaziantep. The museum was built by the metropolitan municipality in 2018 to show what the pistachio has meant to the history and economy of the city and to present it to the world, and opened on 21 September 2018. In its first five years it received 180,000 visitors, and in 2019 it was given the Living Museum award by the Union of Historical Towns.
The building stands within the Pistachio Park laid out on the grounds of the Pistachio Research Institute and is designed in the form of a pistachio. It has nine main sections: the history of the nut, the regions where it grows, the other plants of its family, technical information, the harvest, the varieties, nutritional values, uses, and oral history. The harvesting and processing of the nut are shown with mechatronic figures. The oral history work carried out with growers, processors and academics is one of the focal points of the museum, and all ten varieties of pistachio grown in Gaziantep are displayed.
