The Fatih Sultan Mehmet Museum stands in the Babademirtaş quarter of central Edirne, in the building known as the Saatli Medrese — the clock medrese — which is part of the Üç Şerefeli Mosque complex and was built by Sultan Murad II.
That makes the building itself part of the story it tells. Construction fell in the childhood and early youth of Mehmed the Conqueror, and it is related that he studied here as a prince, or that the bed-i besmele, the ceremony marking a child's first lesson, was held in these rooms.
The medrese was badly damaged in the great Edirne earthquake of 1752. The General Directorate of Foundations drew up and carried out a restoration between 2014 and 2019, and the building opened as a museum in 2021.
Inside, the subject is Mehmed II himself — from his childhood and years as a prince to the conquest of İstanbul, and on to his role in the sciences, culture and the arts. The material is presented through dioramas, models, miniatures and interactive displays rather than through cases of objects.
