Değirmenburnu lies at the northern end of Heybeliada, one of the nine islands of the Adalar district in the south-east of İstanbul province. The Ministry of Environment and Forestry declared this part of the island a nature park in 2011; it covers 12.28 hectares.
Besides walking and swimming, the park offers carriage rides and daily bicycle hire, and there is an open-air coffee house on the site.
Historic buildings within and around the park that can be visited include the Heybeliada sanatorium, the Orthodox theological school and a windmill.
The island is reached by passenger ferry: about twenty kilometres from Kabataş, ten from Bostancı and six and a half from Kartal.
The climate is under Mediterranean influence, with hot dry summers and mild wet winters, and little difference between day and night temperatures. The prevailing wind is from the north-west; winds blow through the year, and strong north-westerlies come in February and June. The lowest temperature recorded is 4.3 degrees, in February, and the highest about 31 degrees, in July. Relative humidity does not fall below seventy per cent even in June or July.
The plants of the park are mostly Turkish red pine, stone pine, maritime pine and black pine, with bay laurel, Mediterranean cypress, southern magnolia, Atlas cedar, loquat, hackberry, Judas tree, rockrose, Spanish broom, ivy and photinia.
The mammals seen here are squirrels, hedgehogs, hares and moles, and the birds magpies, sparrows and crows.
