The monument on Cumhuriyet Meydanı in Kastamonu, made by Prof. Tankut Öktem in 1990 and also known as the monument to the Turkish women of Kastamonu, commemorates Şerife Bacı and those like her. She stands for the Turkish women who carried ammunition from İnebolu to Kastamonu during the War of Independence.
The story told of her is specific. In December 1921, in the hard conditions of that winter, she came as far as the front of the barracks with her child on her back and her ox cart before her, and froze to death protecting the cartridges and her child. Through the war years a great many volunteers, women and men, supported the national struggle by carrying ammunition and supplies along the İnebolu-Ankara logistics line, and the support they gave changed the course of the war considerably; Şerife Bacı was one of those volunteers, and the monument was raised to keep her name and theirs alive.
