The mosque takes its name from the stonework of its minaret: black and white stone, laid in courses up to the balcony and in a chequer pattern above it. The minaret is built over the door.
The mosque was built in 1203-1204 in the Artuqid period, small and rectangular in plan. It went through a major repair in the nineteenth century, and the worked wooden ceiling belongs to that time. It is in the Harput quarter.
