The building is a nineteenth-century house in the classical Ottoman manner. Ünye municipality expropriated it in 2009 and completed its restoration in 2013 with the technical guidance of Prof. Dr. Zeynep Ahunbay; that year it won an award in the Historic Towns Association's competition for heritage conservation and practice.
The house was then turned into a museum of living cultural heritage — that is, of intangible heritage: the practices and crafts that are carried on rather than displayed. The municipality describes it as the fourth of its kind in Türkiye and the first on the Black Sea coast, and says it is the only museum in Türkiye authorised to use the UNESCO logo.
It stands behind the district governor's office, at the end of Hacı Emin Caddesi — Hamidiye, Aliçer Sokak No 2.
