Excavation at Tekkeköy in 1940 brought up material of the Hittite period and of the Early Bronze Age, and the caves in the valley count among the oldest traces of settled life on the Black Sea coast.
Most of the Hittite-period finds are wheel-made pottery in buff and red. The Early Bronze Age level yielded a great many burials along with handmade pottery: vessels decorated with geometric designs painted in white on a dark ground, others with toothed, fluted and incised ornament, and vases modelled with human faces in relief.
The valley today holds a number of caves along with visitor facilities, and a museum house in which copies of the finds made here are displayed. There is no charge, and the site can be visited at any hour.
