The monument stands on a hill at the Gediz junction, built by the Kütahya governorate and the special provincial administration with the support of the Ministry, and opened on 30 August 2010.
What it commemorates happened elsewhere, on 30 August 1922 near the Porsuk bridge at the tenth kilometre of the Kütahya-Afyonkarahisar road: Captain Hamdi, a doctor taking medicine to the cavalry division at Kütahya, and 158 soldiers with him were killed there by the Greek 53rd regiment. Gediz is 94 kilometres from Kütahya, reached by road.
