Seka Park was made on the grounds of the old SEKA paper factory in İzmit. It lies in the city centre on the shore of the Gulf of İzmit, beside the D-100 road, and covers about 580 decares.
The SEKA cellulose and paper factory opened in İzmit in 1934 and was closed in 2004. The factory grounds were transferred in their entirety to the Kocaeli metropolitan municipality on condition that they be used as public green space, and after the ground was laid out with alterations it opened to the public as Seka Park.
Within it are a pier, a paper and city museum, places to sit and rest, light towers, fish restaurants, slipways running down to the sea, running and walking paths, congress and performance spaces, art and exhibition halls, and indoor and outdoor sports grounds.
The cultural centre in the park called the Kocaeli Mevlevi Centre was made by the metropolitan municipality in 2008 from one of the old SEKA staff houses. Known as the 1710th Mevlevi House, it was founded to pass on and present the Mevlevi culture and the thought of Mevlâna to younger generations.
