Salih Efendi Sokak is the street that carries the historic fabric of Kilis most completely, and it takes its name from the mufti Salih Efendi, father of Muhlis Efendi, who was mayor of Kilis in 1907.
The old houses of Kilis carry fine examples of Seljuk and Ottoman architecture, and their interiors repay attention as much as their fronts: walls of old stone, wooden windows and doors, small ornamental pools inside the houses, and separate summer and winter sections. Houses like these stand in almost every street in Kilis, and the Ministry is frank about their condition — some are neglected and some are ruins. Most of those on Salih Efendi Sokak, however, were restored as part of the street rehabilitation carried out by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 2010 and 2011, which is why this is the street to walk if you want to see what the town looked like.
