The Radio and Gramophone Museum in Malatya is in a two-storey mudbrick house on İnönü Caddesi, built in keeping with the architecture of the city. It holds 703 pieces in all — radios, gramophones, microphones and radio equipment, together with the transmitter, antenna and broadcasting apparatus of Malatya Radio, which went on air in the 1960s — so that the way the radio and the gramophone changed over time can be followed in one place. Radio magazines and periodicals published in the 1940s and 1950s are part of the collection too.
The displays are arranged as corners: a photograph corner, the Malatya Radio corner, the Fahri Kayahan corner, the political history corner, the first radio broadcast corner, and the radio repair corner of Fehmi Usta. The oldest object in the museum is a polyphon of 1890 — what would now be called a music box. The point the museum makes about these machines is that they were not only sources of music and information but things that shaped daily life and held communities together.
