Nevşehir Castle stands on a hill in the city, built over an underground city, and is among the castles in Türkiye that remain standing. It is thought to have been built in the Seljuk period, in the twelfth century, to protect the caravan road; the road to Baghdad, which passed beside it, is taken to be the reason it was built.
The castle has forty-two embrasures and two gates. It was repaired in the Ottoman period by Nevşehirli Damat Ferit Paşa.
It is one of the important examples of Seljuk defensive building, and today the site serves well as a viewing point over Nevşehir.
