Müze İzmir occupies building number 4 of the old Alsancak tobacco monopoly factory, and is the part of that site run as a museum by the directorate of the İzmir Archaeological Museum. The wider complex around it, the İzmir Culture and Arts Factory, covers some 20,000 square metres and goes back to the end of the nineteenth century, roughly 140 years of the city's industrial heritage; besides the museum it holds a painting and sculpture museum, three libraries — the Alsancak public library, the Atatürk specialist library and the specialist library of Turkic world music — the İzmir State Turkic World Dance and Music Ensemble, the BKM Mutfak, art workshops, an arts street, a recreation area and places to eat.
The administrative frame was set by a presidential decree published in the Official Gazette on 4 August 2022, number 31913, which established the Historic Alsancak Tobacco Factory Culture and Arts Centre Directorate as a provincial body reporting directly to the centre. Building 4 was restored and renovated over a year, and the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, performed the official opening on 29 April 2023.
The museum itself runs to 6,000 square metres over three floors of 2,000 each, and shows around 6,000 objects in cases and in the open. Archaeology occupies the ground and first floors, ethnography the top one, and neither is hung chronologically: the objects are grouped by theme. The archaeological themes are the heritage created from marble, the spirit of entertainment, the world between knowledge and myth, the power that comes from the sea, the symbols of death, the harmony of material and production, and the mind of civilisation. Upstairs the ethnographic themes are splendour and wisdom, the voice of the street, the motifs in which culture is embroidered, and a day in a house of the city.
It is at Ziya Gökalp Bulvarı 36 in Konak, opens every day from 08:30 to 17:30 with the ticket desk closing at 17:00, and the Müzekart is valid here for citizens of Türkiye.
