The castle is one of the important strongholds of the Erzen region, which lies in the triangle between Hasankeyf, Siirt and Maiferkeyn, the modern Silvan. It was built on a rocky hill in AD 416 as a religious centre for the Persian dynasty.
In time, as a station on the Silk Road that passed through this region in the Middle Ages, it came to command all the traffic along it.
The castle remained for many years under the Persian empire, and in the fifth century it was the seat of a Nestorian bishopric. In AD 639 it was taken by the Muslim armies under İyaz bin Ganem.
Much ruined today, it stands in the Kale quarter of the town of Kozluk.
