Kazdağı National Park lies in Edremit, in the province of Balıkesir, and takes its name from the mountain that forms the boundary between the Marmara and Aegean regions.
Several conditions meet here. The park lies in a transitional climate; Kazdağı is the only high mountain in the immediate region; and the range, running east to west across the Biga peninsula, is broken into parts by canyons cut by rivers, of which the best known is the Şahinderesi canyon. Together these have allowed the climates of the sea and the mountain to mix.
Those conditions have made the area rich in endemic species. The Kazdağı fir stands first among them. Seventy-seven species particular to Türkiye have been identified on the mountain, and twenty-nine of them, like the Kazdağı fir, live on this mountain alone.
The Pınarbaşı and Hasanboğuldu picnic grounds within the park are the main places visited, and the village of Mehmetalan falls within its boundaries. The cultural weight of the park lies in the legend of Sarıkız and in her grave, which stands on a hill inside it.
