Zonguldak is a coal town, and this museum is about that and nothing else. It stands in the centre of Uzulmez, in a historic building that was taken in hand in 2018 with the aim of conserving it and bringing it back into use as a museum. It was opened at the end of December 2020.
The governor's office places it inside the Uzulmez Culture Valley project, a provincial special administration scheme backed by the regional development agency BAKKA. That project covers a cluster of registered structures in the same district — among them the chimney of the old coke works and a pit head — and its stated purpose is to keep the industrial heritage of a mining province standing and to open it to visitors.
The museum itself is presented by the authorities as a specialist one, covering the Turkish Hard Coal Enterprise from its founding to the present through documents, records and material evidence. The general manager of the enterprise described it at the opening as offered to future generations in memory of those who lost their lives in the coalfield, and the minister who joined by video link said the names of all the miners would be kept alive there.
