The Cappadocia Living Heritage Museum in Avanos is run by Nevşehir Hacı Bektaş Veli University and opened in 2022. It occupies a historic mansion known by its older name as the Dr Hacı Nuri Bey mansion, an Ottoman-period building that was restored and turned into a museum.
The museum was founded to keep alive and make known the traditional way of life of the Cappadocia region: its handicrafts, its cooking and its social customs. Visitors can look into the details of daily life among the local people, take part in traditional craft workshops and come closer to the cultural inheritance of the region.
It stands beside Şairler Sokağı, the street of poets, which is known for its historic fabric and draws a good many visitors, so that a visit takes in both the old mansion and the street.
The museum holds events and festivals meant to pass this inheritance on: folk dance performances, craft workshops, and the making and tasting of traditional food. It is also supported by teaching programmes, research projects and exhibitions.
