Museum work at Isparta began in 1933 with the opening of the People's House. Archaeological works gathered from the region and Islamic gravestones were displayed in a room of the People's House building arranged as a museum hall. When the People's House was closed the works were moved into various stores. In 1973 a room of the Halil Hamit Paşa Library was used as a museum store and the first museum post was established.
The foundations of the museum building were laid in 1971. The works moved into the new building in 1977 and were taken under protection there, and the museum post became a museum directorate. Construction was completed in 1984 and the museum opened to visitors on 6 March 1985. The building was taken in for repair in 1997, and its displays were renewed and made ready for visitors in 2002.
