This caravanserai has been restored by the General Directorate of Foundations and is open to visitors. It stands about 30 kilometres from the centre of İğdır, on the Batumi-Tabriz line, one of the side roads of the historic Silk Road, and the source describes it as one of the finest examples in Anatolia of a caravanserai built without a courtyard.
There is no inscription on it. It is thought to have been built in the twelfth century, in the Seljuk period, by Şerafettin Ejder Bey, the emir of Sürmari, which is where its second name comes from.
