This is the only mosque built at Ayvalık in the Ottoman period: Abdülhamid II had it put up in the second half of the nineteenth century for the Muslims living in the town.
What makes it unusual is that it holds two plans together — the cubic, centrally domed mosque plan of Ottoman architecture and the pedimented temple plan of ancient architecture — and the provincial directorate describes it as without parallel among Ottoman mosques for this. Eclectic in style, it is built of red cut stone, with a four-columned porch for latecomers and a brick dome on a cylindrical drum. It is on Mevlana Caddesi in the Sakarya quarter, in the centre of Ayvalık.
