Hafıza 15 Temmuz in İstanbul opened on the third anniversary of the coup attempt of 15 July 2016, with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan present. It took shape at a museum workshop held on 7 January 2017 by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality and the 15 July Association, and was realised under the curatorship of the architect Hilmi Senalp. It operates as a unit of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
Its subject is broader than the single night it is named for. Alongside the events of 15 July, the museum sets out coups in Türkiye and elsewhere and the history of empire and colonies, and presents what it describes as an account of military tutelage and colonialism. It is open six days a week; the ministry's page does not say which day it closes, so check before going.
