The Island of Democracy and Freedoms holds a group of museums, of which the Museum of Democracy and Freedoms is the largest. Its subject is the democratic struggles fought in this country from the late Ottoman period and the early Republic through to the present, set out along a timeline and presented through installation artworks and current display technology rather than cases of documents.
The building has three floors and each takes a different frame. The ground floor opens with what democracy has meant for Türkiye. The upper floor widens the view to the course democracy has taken worldwide up to the present day. The lowest floor is the chronological one: the democratic advances made here over time, set against the anti-democratic interventions that interrupted them.
Two further museums stand on the island alongside it — the 27 May Museum and the Adnan Menderes Museum. Guided visits can be arranged in advance for organisations and groups.
Reaching the island means taking a ferry, and the sailing days and times are published separately by the operator.
