Beyşehir Lake National Park was established by a decision of the Council of Ministers in 1993 and covers 88,750 hectares, which makes it the largest national park in Türkiye. Of the forty national parks held under protection by the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks, covering 897,657 hectares in all, this is the widest.
Beyşehir is the largest source of fresh water in the country, and two separate national parks stand on it, Beyşehir and Kızıldağ. The park is counted among the natural places in Türkiye that draw the most visitors.
The forest here is made up of juniper, black pine, fir, cedar and oak. In places the trees run right down to the water, which gives the bays and inlets of the lake much of their look.
What gives the park its value is the landscape, its worth as a shelter for migrating birds, shores suited to water sports, and the cultural remains of the Seljuk period around the lake.
The lake holds a great many islands, large and small, and these add to the interest of the place for visitors. The islands matter for waterbirds as nesting and breeding ground, serving grebes, swans, cormorants, some of the herons and ducks.
