The city museum on Hükümet Caddesi in central Bartın occupies a building that has been in public use since 1885, when it was put up as a primary and rüştiye school. It was turned into a lycée in 1921, ran as the Cumhuriyet primary school between 1944 and 1949, and by a council decision of 7 January 1948 was given over to the municipality, which worked from it from 1953 until 2008. When the municipality moved to a new building in 2009 the town decided that this one should tell its own history, and the museum opened to the public on 27 January 2018.
Inside, twelve rooms carry Bartın from the 1900s to the present: the make-up of its population, its geography, climate and demography, the disasters it has lived through, its trade and farming, its daily life, and its histories of schooling, medicine and the press. The material is presented through panels and text, sculpture and digital displays. Entry is free and the museum is closed on Mondays.
