The mosque in the İmaret quarter of Karaman is known by two names, and the second explains why people come: Mader-i Mevlana, the mosque of Rumi's mother, because the tomb of Mümine Hatun is inside it. In a space set apart on the left of the mosque are 21 stone sarcophagus graves belonging to Rumi's mother, his elder brother and others of his family.
Rumi came to Karaman with his family in 1222, married here and stayed seven years. The building itself, put up in 1370 by Alaaddin Bey of the Karamanids, is really a complex: a bath and dervish cells around it, a burial ground to its south and west, and the tombs and graves within. It is in the centre of Karaman, easily reached by city minibus and municipal bus.
