The Tomara waterfall lies within the Şiran district of Gümüşhane, in the valley of the Tomara stream, a branch of the Kelkit. It takes its name from the annual plant tomara, known also as kaldirik, which grows in the area.
The fall is not like the ordinary kind that drops over a sheer face: the water begins to run over a sloping surface. It emerges from the hillside as a strong karstic spring, and falls thirty-five metres wide and fifteen metres high into the Tomara stream. The water drops eighteen metres on the eastern side, fourteen in the middle and twenty-two on the west. No plunge pool or lake has formed beneath it.
The fall lies south of the district centre near the village of Seydibaba, twenty-one kilometres from Şiran, north-west of Ağagüneyi Tepesi on the south-east slope of the Tomara valley.
