The house was built in 1320 of the Hijri calendar — 1902 or 1903 — as the inscription on its second floor shows, and in 1908 it was used by Hatip Bey, the lord of Hazro.
It was allotted as a residence for Mustafa Kemal Atatürk when he came to Silvan on 15 April 1916. As commander of the Sixteenth Corps, posted to the eastern front during the First World War, he arrived at Silvan with his headquarters on that date, took over responsibility for the region and halted the Russian advance towards Diyarbakır. From here he went on to free Bitlis and Muş from enemy occupation.
The building was expropriated by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 1980 and registered as an Atatürk House in 1992. It was restored that same year, rearranged in 2024 and opened as a museum.
The house stands at 22 Sokak in the Kale quarter of Silvan. It is open from 8.30 to 17.00, closed on Mondays, and there is no charge for entry.
