The mosque in the centre of Sulakyurt was built in the fifteenth century by Şeyh Şamil. It has been damaged at various times, and the repairs that followed have taken away part of its architectural character.
The tomb beside it, on higher ground, belongs to the founder of the district, and it is visited often by people from Türkiye and abroad. The source gives his name in two forms on the same page, Şeyh Şamil and Şeyh Sami, without reconciling them; it records that Evliya Çelebi describes him — Hamza by his real name — as a man held in respect.
