Kulakkaya is the oldest, best known and most visited of the highland pastures of Giresun, about 45 kilometres from the city, attached to the town of Yavuzkemal in the Dereli district. It was declared a tourism centre in 1991 and is laid out on one of the historic silk road routes; it counts among the oldest authentic settlement areas not only in Giresun but in the eastern Black Sea generally.
What makes it a day-trip destination rather than a season-long one is its height: it lies lower than the pastures around it, which gives it a longer season and easier access, so people come for the day.
