One thing to know before setting out: the Akdoğan lakes, also called Hamurpet, are not open to visitors. The area was registered in 2021 as a wetland of local importance. The lakes lie in the Varto district of Muş at 2,200 metres, and there are two of them, freshwater, sharing a shore and partly connected to one another.
The larger lake lies west of the Hamurpet mountains, ringed on all sides by sheer rock. Being shallower than the smaller lake it appears green. It is fed by springs and snowmelt, freezes in winter, and its level changes little through the year; it holds a great many mirror carp, and duck, goose, crane and beaver are found there. The ground around is volcanic, and the lake discharges its surplus into the İskender stream nearby. The smaller lake lies to the south, is small and circular, and at 47 metres deep appears blue; it drains into the larger lake from below. The area is 68 kilometres from Muş.
